Horses have been significant to the Pennsylvania State Police since day one and today they symbolize a special piece of the law enforcement family.

Corporal Wes Van Wyk, of PSP, said the department was created in 1905 and horses have been part of the team ever since.

Back then that’s how state police patrolled.

While that’s not primarily the case today, they’re still very much part of the police family.

You’ll find many standing tall as the department hosts a memorial services for fallen officers.

Tyree Blocker, Commissioner of PSP said the tribute is an valuable way to pay respects.

“We are serious about never forgetting the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” Blocker said.

Among those, Trooper Landon Weaver, who was shot and killed on duty four months ago.

But his legacy lives on…with a hooved hero.

After the passing of Corporal Dickson in 2014, the department decided to name their horses in honor of those killed in the line of duty.

“It’s very special…It’s a continued connection with the department. It’s a way of us honoring their ultimate sacrifice and it’s really neat to see the families come down and interact with the horse,” Van Wyk said.

He said the animals are kind in nature and seem to create a powerful bond with mourning families.

“It’s also a source of pride that we are honoring and remembering some of our brothers who have fallen,” Van Wyk said.

The department said family members of any family trooper can visit their horse any time they want.
