The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies announced the three recipients of the 2018 Apollo Award Wednesday.

Dr. Camille and Mrs. Dorothy Maravalli, Dr. Richard and Dr. Diana Schroeder, and Dr. William and Dr. Kathy Thompson are the 2018 recipients of the Apollo Award.

This award is given annually to members of or family member of the medical community who have significantly contributed to improving the quality of life in the area, and who go above and beyond the normal work of their field.

The Maravallis have been big supporters of the local arts, including the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, the Community Arts Center of Cambria County, Cresson Lake Playhouse, and Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. They are both active in their church, Dorothy created the Bach’s Lunch fundraiser, which delivers lunchtime meals to local business, and she served as an emergency room nurse at Lee Hospital for 15 years.

The Schroeders have coordinated a summer internship called Mentoring in Medicine for local pre-medical students through Conemaugh Medical Center. Over 150 pre-medical students from Cambria, Somerset, and Bedford counties have completed the internship to date. Over 85 percent of these students have continued on to medical school.

The Thompsons moved to Boswell, Somerset County in 1990, as part of a Commitment Bill that encouraged students to become family doctors in underserved areas of Pennsylvania. They both volunteer at North Star School District and North Star Youth Outreach, and have gone on mission trips to Haiti. Bill works at Medical Associates of Boswell, and Kathy has been an associate professor of biology at Allegheny College of Maryland since 2017.

The 2018 Apollo Award winners will be honored at a dinner on November 7 at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Johnstown.

Tickets are $100 and can be reserved online at cfalleghenies.org or by contacting Katrina Perkosky at kperkosky@cfalleghenies.org or 814-536-7741.
