Police closed streets near the state Capitol after a shooting incident late Friday afternoon, according to our sister station, WHTM.

The suspect was killed in the area of 17th and Mulberry Streets, according to Harrisburg Police.

The bomb squad is investigating a suspicious device near the body of the suspect in a shooting spree in Harrisburg late Friday afternoon.

Police believe the suspect is connected to a string of shootings throughout the city that started with shots fired into a capitol police vehicle.

Department of General Services spokesman Troy Thompson said an officer was driving on North Third Street and someone in a “suspect vehicle” going the opposite direction fired multiple shots when the vehicles were in “close proximity.”

The police vehicle was struck by gunfire, but the officer was not hit or injured.

The incident occurred near the North Street intersection around 4:15 p.m.  A restaurant owner in the 500 block of North Third Street said he heard three or four shots fired.

Investigators have not confirmed reports that the shooter also fired at a Capitol Area Transit bus in the area of Fourth and Walnut streets.

A state trooper was taken to the hospital with minor, non-life threatening injures in relation to the incidents, but investigators have not said how the trooper was hurt.
