Some local school students would probably tell you that recess was more fun than usual on Wednesday. Children at Juniata Elementary School in Blair County spent a good portion of the day focusing on whole body health with a health fair and relay recess event.
Music with a good beat may have made an outside obstacle course a little less daunting. Kindergartners and first graders learned some basic exercise moves in the gym. Other sessions throughout the school included zumba, yoga, karate, nutrition, CPR, and police safety.
School nurse Britaney Dodson wanted the students to “think outside the box” about health and fitness.
“Even with them coming in here doing the CPR, they’re having a good time, they’re enjoying it. Health can be fun, getting your hands on, and getting involved in these things. It’s a good time,” she said.
And Wednesday night, students and their parents planned to return to the school to do laps and raise money for Relay for Life.
The health fair was combined with the annual Relay Recess event that involves students walking laps throughout the day. Students and parents also planned to walk the outside of the school in the evening in support of pledges raised to benefit the American Cancer Society.
