The Somerset County Commissioners are looking ahead to what they want to accomplish in 2018.

During their regular meeting Tuesday morning, the commissioners discussed priorities set by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania.

The top four priorities include human services system reform and funding, preventing drug overdoses and substance abuse, maintaining the shale gas impact fee and increasing bed access for county inmates with mental illness. Other priorities include supporting veterans services, funding for voting systems and mandate reform.

“You know, it’s a pretty easy sell when we’re all speaking with the same voice. That’s why I think it’s important they narrowed it to seven priorities and we can work on it from there,” said Gerald Walker, Somerset County Commissioner Chairman.

The commissioners said they will meet with state and federal legislators in the next few weeks to try to secure funding to reach their goals for the county.
