Small College World Series returning to DuBois

DuBois, Pa. (WTAJ)– A big baseball tournament for small colleges is returning to DuBois next week.

The City of DuBois is hosting the USCAA Small College World Series Championships for the second year.

It brings in baseball and softball teams from across the country to compete, and stay in Clearfield County.

According to Visit Clearfield County, more than 500 players were in town and 1,500 hotel rooms were booked.

“The people enjoyed DuBois, they went to the restaurants, they went downtown to shop, so it was a really nice economic boost, a shot in the arm for DuBois,” Visit Clearfield County executive director Josiah Jones said.

Jones said he expects this year’s tournament will be a home turf advantage for the economy once again.

As for the competing teams, the Penn State DuBois baseball team won the title last year, and hope to defend the title this year.

“It was sweet, awesome to dog pile and just that feeling of working hard all year and finally being able to accomplish our goal, that was awesome,” baseball player Toner Corl said.

The Penn State DuBois softball team will be competing in the world series for the first time.

“It’s home, so we’ll feel more comfortable being here.” softball player Melody Young said. “We’ll know what to do and have more experience.”

The tournament kicks off Sunday, May 12 with the parade of teams and home run derby. Games start Monday, May 13.
