After the skate park in Ridgway was torn down in 2015, a group began working to replace it.
“Well we used to have a skate park, but it fell into disrepair, I had cancer and couldn’t help, they tore it down,” president of the Ridgway Recreational Authority Gary Gerber said. “Kids were all upset. I promised we’d get another one.”
Gerber said the Ridgway Recreational Authority began fundraising last year.
Through community donations, they collected around $36,000.
So far they’ve installed part of the park, put down blacktop and the fence.
Construction is fully funded by community donations, but they do still need donations to help maintain and add additional features to the park.
They would still like to add signage, trash cans and security cameras.
“This town is amazing, Ridgway is an awesome place,” Gerber said. “We had a GoFundMe page, people donated there. The community really pitched in and we got this much done.”
The left side of the park will be for more advanced skaters, while the other side will have a youth park.
“With gentle bumps and things they can do their tricks on because I have grandkids too,” Gerber said.
The goal is to have the park open by the time kids get out of school for summer.
