A self-defense class taught more than a dozen women and girls how to protect themselves, while also helping local women in need.

Saturday, the self-defense class was hosted by John Fontana, who runs the Savior Martial Arts Krav Maga school out of the FWA gym in Johnstown. The U.S. Marines veteran learned the self-defense and fighting technique while he was in the military. When he moved back home to Johnstown, he started the school.

He says anyone can effectively use Krav Maga, even if you’re shorter or smaller than your attacker.

“It’s very practical. Very simple movements that you can remember,” Fontana said.

“Self defense is super important,” said Mandy Gutilla, a student in the class. “I like to do a lot of things on my own. So, I think it’s important to learn how to defend myself in any way possible. Plus,  I think it’s fun.”

“I walk alone in the city by myself after work. So it’s nice to have confidence in myself that I can do something,” said Jennifer Kough, another student.

The moves can be used if you’re choked, grabbed from behind or held down. For example, striking attackers in the eyes, throat or groin, kicking them, or quickly breaking free from their grip to run away.

“I’m not trying to teach anybody to stand and fight, just to protect themselves and get out of a bad situation,” Fontana said.

Fontana holds the class a couple times a year, but always in April: Sexual Assault Awareness Month. As his way of giving back to the community, the class benefits the local Women’s Help Center in Johnstown. Students donated money and hygiene products to help women in need in Cambria and Somerset County.

Gutilla said she was happy to help a good cause and she feels empowered knowing she can protect herself.

“I want to go for hikes by myself, I want to go explore by myself, but I don’t want that fear. So, if I can equip myself with some skills, I don’t feel as fearful and I’m prepared,” Gutilla said.
