ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. — (WTAJ) — Some area scouts took part Saturday in a nationwide effort to break a Guinness World Record.

Starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, they began washing cars at the NAPA location in Altoona. They were trying to help beat the record for the largest number of cars washed in an eight hour period at multiple locations.

The NAPA Store asked Cub Scout Troop 349 and Boy Scout Troop 49 to represent the Altoona area. Their leader Todd Brinton said it’s a good learning experience for the boys.

“They’re building character, they’re team building, they’re interacting with each other. The cub scouts get to see what it’s like to be an older boy scout and how they work together. The boy scouts are doing some leadership and mentoring which helps out with their ranks as well,” he said.

Brinton said  by mid-afternoon, the boys had already washed more than 50 cars, which is the number needed in order for them to have their totals included in the contest.

All the money raised at the event goes to programs for the local scouts.
