Pennsylvania once had the most volunteer fire fighters in the country, with 300,000. That was in the 1970’s.
Today, there are only about 70,000 volunteer firefighters in the Commonwealth.
Losing volunteer fire departments could end up costing tax payers more money.
That’s because cities and counties would have to contract out fire departments or hire career firefighters.
However, Centre County leaders think they may have found a solution.
Centre County Commissioners want to give you an incentive to join an EMS organization or fire department.
“They want to recruit more volunteers,” said Centre County Public Safety Training Center Coordinator Mark Keller.
So the county is giving out six scholarships, each worth $2,500.
To be eligible, you must be a member or plan to join an EMS organization or fire department in Centre County.
The scholarships are for a program at the South Hills Business School or an adult education program at the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology.
Those involved in with public safety in Centre County believe the scholarships can boost career and technology education and first responders.
“The cost of education is getting higher and if I can volunteer some time and also help to have my schooling paid for it’s definitely and asset,” said Keller.
The scholarships are for this upcoming academic year.
