After a series of scams in the Somerset County area, police are warning folks to be cautious.

On Thursday, they posted about two new scams.

The first is the spoofing of the Somerset Hospital phone number. ‘Spoofing is the fraudulent or malicious practice in which a phone call is placed from an unknown number disguised as a source known to the receiver.’ Police say unless you were expecting a call from the hospital do not answer or hang up immediately. If in doubt, hang up and call the hospital yourself at 814-443-5000.

The second scam involves a fake out of state sheriff’s department. The caller will say a family member was arrested and a money order is needed to bail them out. Somerset Police say police departments will never call you asking for money to bail someone out.

If you receive either of these calls, or any other scam call you are asked to call police.
