Last year the Johnstown Train Station turned 100 years old and it is showing its age.
Right now the Johnstown Area Heritage Association is leading a major renovation effort.
When the building opened in 1916 it was a real asset to the city. JAHA thinks this building could be key to drawing more people downtown.
A couple of years ago, JAHA officials recognized the train station was in desperate need of repairs. They fixed the roof and stopped the leaks, but more work in needed. The old building has gorgeous architecture and there are hopes it will fill a big need for tourist – parking.
“We’re getting a lot of visitors coming through Johnstown. They don’t know what to do or where to go,” said Richard Burkert, JAHA President & CEO. “We see this as one of the multiple uses. Visitors can park their car, rent a bike or take a CamTran shuttle through Cambria City and the downtown.”
JAHA is also working with consultants on other uses for the building, including a weekly farmer’s market.
