A commercial truck driver training program in Johnstown will help people living in poverty find a job that’s in demand and pays well so they can get back on their feet.

Johnstown Area Regional Industries (JARI) is holding a commercial truck driver job training program in the spring because of the demand for those workers.

Workforce Development Director Debi Balog said it’s an intense, but rewarding program. Students need to pass a background check, a physical, attend classes and pass a commercial driver’s license test.

The 8-week, 240-hour program will be taught at the Greater Johnstown Career & Technology Center.

In total, ten people who live in Woodvale, Old Conemaugh Borough, Prospect or Kernville will be accepted into the program and get to take the course for free. However, JARI will open up the program to applicants from the greater Johnstown area if there are still spots open.

Balog said driving trucks is difficult and a big responsibility. The vehicles don’t maneuver well and drivers need to be prepared for icy or inclement road conditions. That’s why she said preparation and safety are priorities in the course and on the job.

“Safety is one of the number one issues that we deal with in that training,” Balog said. “Then, if they transfer into employment, those companies that employ our truck drivers: safety is number one for all of them.”
