On Sunday Penn State’s ‘Student Pink Zone’ hosted its third annual run.
Sarina May, a senior at Penn State and member of the Pink Zone, said it’s an event for people of all ages to make a difference.
“As students we have a lot of power to raise money and to be supportive of the community,” May said.
She added that the cause goes beyond campus.
“We can hear from survivors and current patients, how breast cancer has affected their lives and see how we can help them,” May said.
Survivors like Marjoire Miller who said later this month will mark 6 years cancer free.
“This event has always been really important to me as well as any Pink Zone events,” Miller said.
As she reflected on her time battling cancer, she said community support can make a big difference during the fight.
“There’s people here who just have your back and can understand, maybe not fully what you’re going through but they just want to be there for you. So the more people that come out to this, the better it is,” Miller said.
The total run distance is one mile but Miller said it’s not the speed or the distance that matters, rather the overall presence.
“Having more people support you just kind of lifts you up and you know it takes a village, I guess for everyone,” Miller said.
From face painting to a silent auction, the event has something for everyone to enjoy.
And as she approaches a happy milestone, Miller said she’s always in the “Pink Zone.”
“I think every year is a celebration i think every one of these events is a reminder and also a celebration,” Miller said.
