ALTOONA Pa. (WTAJ) — A union that represents workers at the VA Medical Center in Altoona is rallying against a new national plan.

The new VA plan would cut the number of work hours union leaders can consult with their members.

Employees at James E Van Zandt VA Medical Center and Veterans protested today at the corner of Pleasant Valley Boulevard and South 22nd Street.

They say they were trying to raise awareness about how these plans could affect everyone in the community.

“This not only affects us. It affects our veterans. It affects our communities. It affects the economic in our communities. We need the public’s support for this. It’s not just us,” said Andy Scherzinger: President, James E Van Zandt Medical Center.

The plan would also give veterans more opportunities to seek care from Non-VA Medical Facilities.

That has workers worried that the government is planning to privatize the VA healthcare system.

However, the VA issued a statement today calling that claim, a myth.
