Today students at Penn State did not have classes in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day…more than 240 students, spent the day volunteering in the community.

The volunteer effort was part of the university’s MLK Day of Service…which saw students helping out local organizations.

Which included State College Meals on Wheels where students cleaned out the kitchen.

And the Schlow Library where students tidied-up book shelves.

We spoke with one student on why she decided to volunteer.

“When I was younger, a lot of our family needed a lot of service, a lot of help since was mom was a single mom, not making any money… service has been a part of my life for a really long time. and after coming on campus I really wanted to give back and be involved more…so that’s the reason I’m at MLK today,” said PSU student, Isatu Fofanah.

The student group organizing the event hopes to have even more student  involvement next year.
