The official map for Ferguson Township designed in 2008 is undoubtedly out of date.
It doesn’t even show the entire region or new developments that have been established over nearly a decade.
So community planner, Lindsay Schoch, along with an analyst and other planning groups, hit the drawing board.
Schoch said the new proposed map is a big tool for planning.
It highlights the current layout of the township, pinpoints growth boundaries where construction is limited, and future projects like new bike paths.
Peter Buckland, a supervisor for the township, said it’s a visual tool to show the region is filled with possibilities.
“There is a lot of potential development…The growth of the University, the strength of the local economy, draws people in,” Buckland said.
He said it keeps the local government, the community and planers in the loop.
Schoch said during the design phases they received a lot of community input. about sustaining parks and shared roadways.
“And this map is just ensuring that those connections are going to be there in the future,” Schoch said.
It also shows plans in the works.
An orange square near the center illustrates a property which the township may purchase and build a new fire station.
“It just helps people look at where the township believes we ought to be moving,” Buckland said.
Scoch said it took a little over a year to design, but if approved the final product will be worth the hard work.
Before it can become the official map it has to be voted on and approved by the board of supervisors.
That process is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. at the Ferguson Township Municipal Building.
