Prom held for those with special needs

A special needs prom was held Sunday in Altoona.

Several counties were represented with families from across the region, with a variety of foods and a photo stand, as well as a dance floor.

The organizer said there are many reasons why the kids don’t attend prom at their schools.

“Due to sensory issues with the music being too loud, with the lights flashing, strobe lights at a dance, those kinds of things…To make sure they have an atmosphere they can tolerate the most,” Kimberly Capenos said.

Parents are thankful for the event.

“At an event like this, it’s so friendly for them and plus they’re with their friends… Their friends are here this is just much more social for her,” Jayne Burke said.

Another special needs prom is set for May 20 in Bedford.
