During their weekly meeting on Tuesday, Centre County Commissioners said they’ve received a notice from the Court of Common Pleas in Montgomery County that a lawsuit may be coming their way.
Steven Dershem, Centre County Commissioner, said it caught the office off guard.
The action is on behalf of the firm of Bruce Castor.
Castor is the Special Assistant and Civil Lawyer for Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller.
Parks Miller said she assigns him special projects, but in 2015 she hired Castor to defend her after the commissioners tired to spark an investigation connected to allegations that she forged a judge’s signature.
A grand jury ultimately cleared her of any wrongdoing.
Now, on behalf of Castor, the office of Dischell Bartle Yanoff and Dooley said the county needs to pay for his services defending the county’s District Attorney.
The summons said there’s a debt of over $50,000.
When WTAJ emailed Castor about the notice he said, “we wrote a year ago asking the county to pay us and it refused,” but never got a response.
Commissioners said there was no payment agreement in the first place.
Both parties reference statutes in regards to who is responsible for any payout.
In an email, Castor said this notice indicates there is intention to sue and “we hired the Dischell Bartle firm to seek to collect outstanding legal fees Centre County owes us.”
But commissioners say without more information, they’re not jumping to hand out any cash.
