Pa. (WTAJ) — With the summer-like temperatures beginning in Pennsylvania, State Police are reminding pet owners about the “Hot Car Bill.”

The bill, signed into law last October, allows law enforcement and emergency responders to remove dogs and cats from a vehicle if it’s showing signs of distress. Like humans, animals can suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

An officer must first attempt to locate the driver of the vehicle, and use only the necessary force to gain access to the pet. The officer is also required to leave a notice on the vehicle about where the dog or cat can be retrieved.

Police are also reminding folks that the bill does not give the public that right. Anyone with concerns about a pet’s safety is encouraged to call police.
