A former Windber police officer who resigned earlier this month has a criminal record in Maryland.
William Smith, 53, served six months in prison in 2007 for a misdemeanor sex offense in Anne Arundel County in Maryland, according to circuit court documents.
The Somerset County district attorney took over the investigation into Smith, specifically his communications with a juvenile in both Windber and Geistown Borough jurisdictions, according to WTAJ’s news partners at The Tribune-Democrat.
Smith was hired as a police officer after receiving certification from The Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (MPOETC).
Since Smith only served six months in prison, he still met the qualifications to be certified through MPOETC.
