Indiana police responded to St. Bernard Regional Catholic School after a student brought a 0.38 revolver to school.
Police were called to the school at 8:40 a.m. Monday. An 11-year-old boy was in a classroom with his teacher and one other student after the start of the school day. The teacher saw the student was displaying uncharacteristic and unusual behavior, and noticed the student was holding a gun. The gun was fully loaded with five rounds.
The gun was reported stolen by the child’s guardian, who owns the gun, after it went missing on September 15. Police said the student was unaware the gun was in his backpack until he arrived at school. The teacher said the student was visibly distraught and shocked upon discovering the gun.
School officials said that the gun was secured without an incident, and that the student was cooperative. All indications show that the student did not know that the firearm was in his backpack, and did not know how to fire a gun.
No criminal charges are being made against the student, and there are no known threats to any students, teachers, or staff at St. Bernard Regional Catholic School.
The investigation is ongoing.
