Police address driving with medical marijuana

Medical marijuana was legalized in Pennsylvania back in 2016, but this year is the first time it was readily available at dispensaries across the state.

This raises the question of how medical marijuana patients should interact with police if they are pulled over. Officers say if you are driving with medical marijuana, it has to be out of reach of the driver. Patients also need to keep certain items on hand.

“You want make sure the medical marijuana is kept in the original container it was purchased in from the dispensary,” said Sergeant Michael Piacentino, Manheim Township Police Department. “They want to make sure they have all their paperwork with them which would be the original receipt, as well as their medical marijuana card.”

Like any other narcotic prescription, you can still get a DUI if you use it and then drive.

Police also remind people that it’s very easy to cross state lines with the prescription and break another state’s law.
