After months of shipping pipes for sewer and water line projects from Ohio and Pittsburgh to the Johnstown region, the company Pipelines Inc. decided to open up a permanent branch in the area.
“Glad to be in Johnstown,” said Tag Lewis, the president of Pipelines Inc.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday at the company’s new location on Iron Street. Pipelines leases the property from the Johnstown Redevelopment Authority, who hopes the company will stay in the area for awhile.
“The Authority has a 5-year lease agreement with Pipelines with the hopes of four 5-year extensions,” said Melissa Komar, the executive director of the Johnstown Redevelopment Authority.
One of Pipelines’ clients does construction work for the Johnstown sewer project. Pipelines employees said they were traveling to the area so much, it made sense to set up shop in Johnstown. They will save about $2,000-$3,000 a week on shipping costs.
“Work picked up in the area. We were delivering five days a week, so it made sense to move here and this is the perfect location,” said Michael Freeman, the Johnstown branch manager for Pipelines.
Pipelines will hire about 12 employees at the Johnstown branch. Six have been hired so far.
The company’s president said now that Pipelines is closer to where the demand is, they hope to get even more business.
“A quarter of a million people within the close proximity of Johnstown which is actually a good size market,” said Lewis.
