A new initiative to reduce the diversion of unused opioid prescriptions is now underway in our region. On Thursday, Duncansville Pharmacy received a supply of special pouches you can use to deactivate and dispose of narcotics.
Blair and Cambria are among 12 counties included in the state effort to fight opioid abuse. Pharmacist Tricia Parrish encourages customers to take the drug deactivation pouches and use them.
“It’s very simple,” she said. “You have your pouch open. It can accept up to 45 pills, six ounces of liquid, or six patches and you put them in the pouch, fill it up half way with warm water, reseal it, put it in the garbage and that’s it..”
At Duncansville Pharmacy, the pouches are located next to the checkout register.
