A lot goes on behind the scenes at PennDOT to prepare for winter weather.

When making a storm plan, PennDOT officials first meet with meteorologists to time the storm.

After that, the Regional Traffic Management Center will be fully staffed to monitor roads and conditions.

This helps them decide if they need to place any speed or vehicle restrictions on the roadways.

Message boards along the interstate have alerts for drivers and will be updated as needed.

“Whether putting up dynamic message signs, monitoring closed circuit TV cameras, whatever that may be, and putting out messages so we keep for the traveling public,” Prestash said.

Plow crews will also be out throughout the storm to clear the roads.

PennDOT officials recommend to not drive if you don’t have to, but if you do have to head out, check 511 PA first.
