The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) issued an update Monday for their Atherton Street project.
Rainy weather has impacted PennDOT’s timeline for completing road work on Atherton Street.
The entire project will take place through 2019, with phased work zones from Aaron Drive to Park Avenue. Work includes the relocation of sewer and water lines, relocation of numerous utility lines, drainage improvements, sidewalks, curbing, ADA ramps, a new concrete median, paving, and traffic signal upgrades.
The project page for this work can be found at www.penndot.gov/AthertonStreet.
Through September 14, drivers can expect the following:
*West Aaron Drive to Park Avenue—entire length of project:
-Other than the long-term lane closure between West North Hills Place and Cherry Lane, there will be no lane closures Friday, September 14, Saturday, September 15, and Sunday, September 16 due to a PSU home football game. Two lanes will be open for inbound traffic and two lanes open for outbound traffic throughout each entire day. The center lane will remain closed and no left turns will be allowed.
*From West Aaron Drive to West North Hills Place:
-No work anticipated
*From West North Hills Place to Cherry Lane:
-Due to the development of a sinkhole, the Northland Center entrance will be closed until repairs can be made sometime this week. This entrance is about 300-feet prior to Blue Course Drive on the right side of Atherton Street heading toward the University.
-A long-term traffic pattern remains in place closing the far, right lane heading toward the University. While the contractor is not working, 2 lanes will remain open for inbound and outbound traffic. However, when the contractor is working, traffic will be reduced to a single lane for inbound traffic. Due to the turning lane being used for inbound traffic, left turns will always be restricted through the length of this work zone. Work in this area will mainly consist of upgrading the existing drainage system, installing new curbing and sidewalk, and placing topsoil.
* From Cherry Lane to Hillcrest Avenue:
-The contractor will be installing new water line in this area. Traffic control will consist of daylight lane closures maintaining traffic to at least one lane in each direction while the contractor is working. Please note that West Cherry Lane (right side toward the University) is now expected to be closed for this work September 12 and 13 (Wednesday and Thursday). There will be a detour using Atherton, Blue Course Drive, and Martin Street). West Cherry Lane will be open on Friday, September 14 due to a PSU home football game this weekend.
-Verizon will continue to perform relocation work. Traffic control will consist of daylight lane closures maintaining traffic to at least one lane each direction.
* From Hillcrest Avenue to Park Avenue:
-No work is planned.
There may be delays, so drivers should allow extra time, and be aware of flaggers and signs.
