Several State College Area High School student organizations are working together to organize Operation Sunshine, a relief effort for a North Carolina school district affected by Florence flooding.

Students are collecting school supplies, books, puzzles, toys, clothes, and personal care items for the Public Schools of Robeson County district in North Carolina. This school district was still recovering from Hurricane Matthew when Florence struck.

State High’s National Honor Society, Key Club, Interact Club, journalism program, and the student government are coordinating the drive, collecting items, and writing encouraging messages to send with the donations. The drive is supervised by social studies teacher Andy Merritt.

The plan is to have the items collected by next week, and then begin sending or delivering the donations and notes to the Robeson County school district to help the students, teachers and staff through these difficult times.

“We decided to name our plan ‘Operation Sunshine’ because we want to bring light back into the lives of these hurricane victims,” said one of the organizers, Helena Haynes.
