PATTON, CAMBRIA COUNTY. Pa (WTAJ) — Multiple organizations came together in Cambria County on Monday to teach about the importance of sharing the road with farmers operating large equipment.

“We just need to get to where we’re going and then we’re back off the road,” Rich Farabaugh, a Farmer in Cambria County, said. “Very little of our time is spent on the road. It’s just a few miles.”

PennDOT partnered with the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Pennsylvania State Police to show the dangers of trying to pass tractors.

“Drivers just need to know the rules of the road,” Trooper Cliff Greenfield, from the Pennsylvania State Police, said. “You are not permitted to pass generally on a curve or on a hill. If you decide to take action like that and you would cause a crash, you very may well be cited for that violation.”

Officials said you should always be following at a reasonable distance. They also encourage people to slow down, be respectful and patient when you encounter a farmer on a highway or local road.

If I know there is a long line of cars behind me I will try and find a safe place to pull over and just let all the traffic go. Not only am I trying to be safe, but I’m trying to be respectful.”

We’re told farm vehicles are also required to obey traffic laws.

They should have a slow moving vehicle emblem on the back, working lights and be using their turn signals.
