New lane restrictions during bridge repairs

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is alerting area drivers that lane restrictions will increase this week on a bridge project along South Atherton Street.

They released the following information on the project

Preservation work on the bridge, which spans Slab Cabin Run on South Atherton Street (Route 3014), near CVS Pharmacy, began in mid-April. Repairs will remove the bridge from Centre County’s structurally deficient list.

Although lane restrictions have been in place since the start of the project, beginning Tuesday, May 2, eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane instead of two. This will result in traffic moving through the construction zone (University Drive to East Branch Road) with one lane for each direction—one lane eastbound and one lane westbound.

This alternating traffic pattern is being enforced by temporary traffic signals, with preservation work taking place in a half-width configuration.

The existing 75-foot bridge dates from 1932. It carries an average of more than 27,000 vehicles daily. Due to the high traffic volumes through this area, motorists should expect long delays and are encouraged to use alternate routes.

Work is expected to last through the end of July and lane restrictions could be in place for the duration of the project. The contractor will be working Monday through Saturday each week to restore 4-lane traffic as quickly as possible.

Overall work at this location includes barrier placement, removal and replacement of the concrete median, deck replacement, beam replacement, guide rail installation, paving, and miscellaneous items.

In 2016, three other bridges saw preservation improvements under this contact. Those structures included: a bridge spanning Irish Hollow on Route 144 in Spring Township; a bridge spanning Gap Run on Route 144 in Spring Township, and a bridge spanning Dewitt Run on Route 504 in Union Township.

All work is weather and schedule dependent. Rylind Construction Company, Inc. of York, PA is the contractor on this $1.4 million project.

Drivers are reminded to follow detours signs, move through work zones with caution, obey posted speed limits, and always buckle up.
