A new initiative that aims to connect citizens with their local governments was announced in Centre County.

The main goal of the program events is to see more adults learn their ABC’s.

It’s a different type of ABC that the County Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County (CBICC) is hoping that will get residents involved with the community.

“So ABC’s stands for Authorities, Boards, and Commissions, and basically this touches every facet of our lives, so whether you’re young or more seasoned, you just want to get involved in the community and help out your neighbors and yourself, you can lend your passions,” said Irene Miller, Vice President of Membership Engagement for the CBICC.

Passions that may range from new development plans, decisions about local parks and pools, and creating organizations that embrace new perspectives.

All subjects that will be discussed by local ABC’s are looking for volunteers to help keep local government working for its citizens. And its not just for employees of businesses, the 11 monthly events from now through November are open to the public too.

“Almost every ABC meeting that you would attend, you’re gonna leave that meeting with some knowledge of something important going on within the community,” said Kevin Kassab, Manager of the Community Engagement Office in State College.

And with this knowledge, you can make an impact, like the University Park Airport Authority who recently voted to expand the airport parking lot.

Which to many, shows that local government doesn’t put you to sleep.
