Thursday, five months after Beta Theta Pi Fraternity pledge Timothy Piazza died as a result of hazing, Penn State Executive Vice President and Provost Nicholas Jones joined lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to unveil an anti-hazing bill.

The bill is called the “Report and Educate About Campus Hazing” or “REACH” Act.

If passed, the bill will require colleges to report hazing incidents as part of their annual crime reports.

“It will require, as the Cleary act does, with other issues like sexual assaults, that there be an educational component and define policies at each of those universities on an annual basis,” says republican representative Patrick Meehan of the 77th Congressional District.

Meehan, who is a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, went on to say he hopes the REACH Act will help prevent more families from losing loved ones.
