A mural will bring some color to a Johnstown city building.

Vision 2025 is working with Johnstown Area Heritage Association, Bottleworks Ethnic Arts Center and the city of Johnstown to create the mural on a concrete garage.

The garage belongs to the public works department. It is located along the river in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

The project was awarded a grant through the PA Department of Community and Economic Development’s “Keep PA Beautiful” program. Out of 40 applicants, the state awarded less than ten.

The mural project received money to buy 20 gallons of paint and a $50 gift card for supplies from Home Depot. Project organizers will need about 30 more gallons of paint before they can start work in September.

While the mural may seem like a small improvement, organizers said it’s all part of a bigger plan.

“This neighborhood’s got great bones. It just needs a little enhancement here. I think it’s going to help make this a successful neighborhood where people will start businesses, consider moving back into places like Cambria City and the city of Johnstown,” said Richard Burkert, CEO of Johnstown Area Heritage Association.

Vision 2025 is still waiting to hear if they will get another $1,000 grant for the mural.

Organizers hope the mural will spark interest to get funding for other improvement projects throughout the city, including a riverfront development in Cambria City.
