Local families battling cancer are getting help paying their bills.
The 3rd Annual Johnstown Walk of Hope raised $36,927. Monday, the money was given to the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, Conemaugh Cancer Center and Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center, as well as the Children are Precious fund.
The money raised is split up among different families to help them pay for transportation, medication or treatment.
“For someone who cannot afford a mammogram, we have this money. No one in the community should say, “I can’t have a mammogram because I can’t afford it’,” said Erin Goins, the director of the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center.
In the past, the money was used to purchase tablets, so patients can read and entertain themselves during chemotherapy treatments.
The event is held every year in June. The Ann Harris Smith Foundation has sponsored the Walk of Hope since it began in 2016.
