Some area college students have been moved out of their dorm rooms due to mold issues. Last week, Penn State Altoona notified students of mold in the Cedar Hall Residence Hall. The university says out of an abundance of caution, it’s now moved students out of one of the two floors affected.

A campus spokesman says crews are cleaning on the first and second floors of Cedar Hall. They started with visible mold and on the second floor are now moving heavy furniture, air conditioners and other larger items to clean behind them. In the meantime, students have vacated that floor and have been offered housing at the  Wingate by Wyndham in Altoona.

Residents on the  first floor, which also has mold and on the third and fourth floors which the university says, aren’t affected, are still at Cedar Hall, according to Timothy Kershner, Director, Strategic Communications, Penn State Altoona.

“There’s no danger at any point. , We’ve been taking air samples, frequently, and the levels of mold in the air are actually less than what they are outdoors,” Kershner says.

He added that first floor residents will be moved out before that level  undergoes more extensive cleaning. The cleanup is expected to be completed in about two weeks. The campus says testing will be done before students are moved back in.
