A major healthcare merger that could affect three area hospitals became official  Friday. PinnacleHealth, headquartered in Harrisburg, announced that it’s joined UPMC, becoming UPMC Pinnacle.

UPMC already owned more than 20 hospitals including UPMC Altoona and UPMC Bedford Memorial. The new deal will add seven hospitals in the Harrisburg area.

JC Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon is an affiliate of PinnacleHealth, not owned by the health system.
It’s not listed as part of the merger deal.

UPMC and Pinnacle say their agreement doesn’t affect patients’ care or insurance coverage.
