Students at a local technical institute celebrated a big accomplishment Friday.
Fifty-five students at the Commonwealth Technical Institute graduated during a ceremony at the Hiram G. Andrews Center in Johnstown.
The institute provides education and workforce training for individuals living with physical or mental disabilities.
One young woman earned her degree in Culinary Arts-Kitchen Helper and her parents said they’re very proud of her accomplishment.
“We’re looking forward to her finding gainful employment. That’s the next step for an independent life. From there, learning to drive, getting a driver’s license, getting a car and getting her own place. So, this is just the beginning,” said Charles Toran, the graduate’s father.
The institute offers several workforce training degrees including business retail, building maintenance, nurse aide and a new welding program, which kicks off at the end of April.
