A rabbi from a Jewish community in Blair County is speaking out after the deadly shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Rabbi Audrey Korotkin from Temple Beth Israel in Altoona said she can’t believe this kind of violence would happen so close to home.

“I’m still trying to process my feelings,” Korotkin said. “I think there’s a certain numbness and just an overwhelming sadness.”

Korotkin learned of the horrifying news Saturday morning. She said she felt shocked, afraid and angry.

“This is literally a sanctuary. This is supposed to be a place of safety and prayer and community,” Korotkin said.

She said the attack is a devastating loss, not just for the Jewish community.

“It’s terrifying to think that it can happen anywhere.”

She said the violence is disgusting.

“I think there’s a certain amount of anger too,” Korotkin said, “That our sacred space has been violated.”

This community, still reeling from a hate crime so close to home.

“I know some of the people who go there on a regular basis. We all do in this community. And I’m angry that they are now hurting. That they are now scared.”
