An SCI Somerset corrections officer has died after being attacked and beaten by an inmate.
Here’s what the Department of Corrections says happened. “On Thursday, February 15, at approximately 7 p.m., Sgt. Mark Baserman was at the officers’ desk in a housing unit day room when an inmate approached him and began assaulting him. The inmate punched the officer, forcing him to the ground and continued to beat him. Another officer working on the same housing unit responded to assist Sgt. Baserman and also was attacked by the inmate.
Today, the DOC reports that Baserman has died from his injuries. The inmate, Jawon Kendrick, is already serving a life sentence. He will now face homicide charges and has been transferred to another state prison. The DOC says Kendrick attacked Baserman over a towel that was confiscated from Kendrick’s cell. The other officer that was injured was released from the hospital. That last time a corrections officer was killed on the job was in 1979.
