A new youth service-learning work program will help local young adults make money this summer and make a difference in their community.

The new Johnstown Youth Corps is recruiting 16-24-year-olds for the summer to complete projects in neighborhoods across the Greater Johnstown area.

The 9-week program will employ 10 youth for 30 hours per week from June through August. The program will pay $8 per hour.

The new youth corps launched with help from a $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. Goodwill of the Southern Alleghenies, CareerLink of Cambria County and Vision 2025 partnered to sponsor the new program.

“I think that these programs can be transformative for young people,” said Wally Burlack, a Vision 2025 coordinator. “Meaningful projects students can work on. You know, doing some painting, work on playgrounds or having some trail activity.”

First, organizers need to hire ten young adults, two adult crew leaders and a coordinator. Then, they’ll reach out to community groups and city leaders to see what projects the corps should tackle this summer.

“I think that we’re really laying the foundation for something that young people will really enjoy, work hard and get a lot out of,” Burlack said.

Young adults who wish to apply can call the PA CareerLink of Cambria County located at 445 Schoolhouse Rd, Johnstown, PA 15904 by calling: (814) 533-2493 and ask to speak with Sarah Helman or email: shelman@gogoodwill.org.
