Starting next week, the city of Johnstown will take an inventory of all its trees.
It’s part of a plan with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to increase urban canopy coverage. The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies funded the project.
Vision 2025 leaders said having more trees is good for the environment and the area’s economy.
“Mature street trees increase property values, we know that. That’s a fact. Mature street trees incentives business to invest in a downtown area, for example. Trees beautify a local environment,” said Ryan Kieta from Vision 2025.
Starting June 5th, workers will use GPS tracking to mark where each tree is on public land throughout the city. After two weeks, the conservancy will use the data to create a master tree plan for the city.
