A Johnstown man is facing multiple charges for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

According to the criminal complaint, three Johnstown police officers responded to a call of an intoxicated man just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. 911 also advised that he stated that he wanted to die.

When officers arrived at the home on Chandler Avenue, Joseph Kearns’s fiance told them he was out of control. After the 35-year-old came out of the house, officers smelled something burning and went into the home to investigate.

Inside, police found a warm propane tank on a table with burn marks, and a cell phone in a melted plastic package.

When questioned, Kearns allegedly threatened Sergeant Goggin and grabbed his throat. Another officer tackled him to the ground, where he continued to choke Goggin. Kearns was then tazed and taken into custody.

Sergeant Goggin was taken to Conemaugh Hospital and treated for cuts on his throat and a possible concussion, which he sustained when he fell with Kearns hitting his head on the cement porch.

Kearns was also treated. His charges include; Aggravated Assault, Resisting Arrest, Recklessly Endangering Another Person and Disorderly Conduct
