A Johnstown landmark is getting a fresh, new look thanks to a group of volunteers and two generous donors.

The gazebo in Central Park in downtown Johnstown is getting a new coat of white paint, speakers and lights.

The Discover Downtown Johnstown Partnership (DDJP) paid for the renovation after they were given a $10,000 donation from Jennifer Shearer, the co-owner of Press Bistro, and a $7,000 anonymous donation. The total renovation costs about $22,000. The DDJP is also using some of the money to purchase and install security cameras in the park.

“The last indication we have that anything major was done to the gazebo, was about 20 years ago. So, it was well overdue and we’re happy to be the ones to be able to do it,” said Melissa Radovanic, the president of the DDJP.

Last week, crews started power-washing and painting. Ray Slaventa is one of the painters working to spruce up the gazebo. In his 36 years as a painter, he has pretty much painted it all, except for a gazebo, until now.

“It just makes everything brighter,” said Slaventa.

His favorite part of the creative process is seeing the finished product.

“Oh, it’s going to look sharp as a pencil,” Slaventa said.

The Johnstown native said he’s happy to lend hand and a paintbrush to get the job done.

“It makes me feel good you know, doing something for the town.”

Crews hope to finish painting by the end of the week, in time to show off a new Halloween light display in Central Park.

The big reveal will happen on Saturday, October 20th for the 9th Annual Fall Family Fun Day in Johnstown.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and the light display will be revealed at 8:30 p.m. It’s free to attend and open to the public.
