ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — Today is the deadline to file your income taxes to the IRS for 2018.

But what will happen if you chose to skip filing taxes altogether?

A.C. Stickel, a tax specialist working at the Tax Shelter in downtown Altoona, says that the consequences will get worse with time.

If you owe anything and you don’t get it filed today you will owe interest and penalties.”

If you find yourself running out of time, filing for an extension can be a last resort option.

“That gives you an extension of time to file,” says Stickel, “it does not give you an extension of time to pay.”

In short, filing for an extension will generate an interest on your total, but will save you the penalty fee of not filing on time.
