‘Hydration History’: thirst-quenching lessons in local history

A thirst-quenching event will teach lessons about local events in history, with a few laughs.

“It’s so important to actually feel history, not just read it,” said Katie Cordek, a volunteer at the Flight 93 National Memorial.

Cordek and Park Ranger John Bernstiel are history buffs. Instead of hitting the books, sometimes they like to learn and laugh by watching the TV show Drunk History.

“I love the show, myself. And you do learn things. I’ll go, ‘Wow, I never knew that.’ And of course, it’s funny also,” Bernstiel said.

Friends of Flight 93, Johnstown Area Heritage Association (JAHA), National Western Parks of Pennsylvania and professors from the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown are hosting a similar event: ‘Hydration History: How Luck Changed History.’ Storytellers will share local tales of bootleggers, robbers and even murder. There will also be themed cocktails for both guest and speakers.

“This is supposed to be a fun event. We want everyone to have a good time. I would be lying if I said we’re not going for laughs,” Bernstiel said.

Park rangers said they hope this event sparks an interest in history for younger generations.

The event will also raise money for JAHA and Flight 93 National Memorial’s first-ever alternative spring break service program for Penn State DuBois students. The students will learn about reforestation, strip mine reclamation and the story of Flight 93. They will also get hands-on experience planting trees during the memorial’s reforestation event at the end of April.

Cordek said ‘Hydration History’ will be a fun way to fundraise and tell stories of unique moments in history.

“You’re experiencing the stories from like a first-person point of view; what this person’s actually going through. So, it’s a unique twist,” Cordek said.

‘Hydration History’ takes place on Friday, April 13 at 7 p.m. at the Johnstown Area Heritage Discovery Center:

201 6th Ave, Johnstown, PA 15906
