Hair salon provides free wig service for cancer patients

When you’re battling cancer, Connie Simmons says there’s power in staying positive. She was diagnosed with cancer in January. After completing 37 rounds of radiation and starting chemotherapy, she’s starting to lose her hair.

“Most women, and let’s face it, I myself, don’t want to lose our hair,” said Simmons. “In the middle of the night when I get up, first thing I do is feel the pillow to make sure my hair’s not on there.”

Niccola Henry owns Niccola’s Hair Salon in Richland Township and wants to help women just like Connie, who have lost hair due to cancer treatments, clinical baldness or thinning hair.

“If you purchase the wig, we we cut it and style it for free. My goal is just build their confidence up and make them feel better,” Henry said.

She started offering a free and private natural wig consultation in January. Already, Henry has helped 30 women find and style natural-looking wigs made from real hair. Now, she wants to help more women look and feel good. She’s reached out to local hospitals to help spread the word.

While Simmons hasn’t lost much hair yet, she ordered a wig and is ready for her new hairdo.

“If your hair looks good, you’re going to look good, you’re going to feel good. You’re going to dress well,” Simmons said. “You’re going to go out there in public and it’s going to be great and someone says, ‘Hey, I really like your hair.’ They’ll never know.”

Since the wigs use real hair, they can be pricey: anywhere between $300-$5,000. The salon is collecting donations to help women buy wigs.

You can contact Niccola’s Hair Salon by calling 814-266-5059 to set up a free wig consultation or to find out how to donate money. The salon is located at 434 Belmont Street Johnstown,  PA 15904.
