Friday was National Go Red for Women Day, a day to wear red to raise  awareness about the risk of heart disease in women. The American Heart Association says heart and blood vessel disease is the leading killer of women.

It takes the lives of more women than accidents, diabetes, and all forms of cancer combined. The organization says that’s approximately one woman every minute or one in three women.

90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. The good news is that heart disease can be treated and prevented:

Here are the lifestyle changes the A.H.A. says to make now:
Don’t smoke, manage your blood sugar and blood pressure, lower your cholesterol, know your family history, stay active, manage your weight and eat healthy.
