Richland Township police arrested three people overnight for trying to break into Gander Mountain in Richland Township.
Logan Brett, Harvey Noel, Jr., and Benjamin Peters are all facing felony charges.
Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, police were notified of a burglary at the store on Galleria Drive. When officers arrived on scene, they found three suspects on the roof.
“Within the past 48 hours they had actually made a hole in the roof and came back early this morning to cut a larger hole and make entry into the building,” said Detective Thomas Keirn from the Richland Township Police Department.
Police officers chased down the men, but one got away when an officer suffered a minor leg injury. That suspect turned himself into police a short time later.
All three suspects are 19-years-old and from Westmoreland County.
Detectives said the burglary was premeditated. The three men have snuck onto the roof four times over the past month.
“I think it was a brazen thing where they had come back several times. Felt comfortable. As long as they hadn’t accessed the building, they didn’t set off an alarm. On this occasion they actually cut open the opening which set off the alarm,” said Det. Keirn.
The area has also seen a number of car break-ins. Detectives said they plan to monitor the area for criminal activity as usual, but hope that store owners and residents take it upon themselves to be vigilant: hiding personal belongings and locking doors and windows.
“It’s not what we would consider a high crime area. Certainly the crimes that have happened there are crimes of opportunity. Whether it’s vehicles or breaking into the building,” Det. Keirn said.
The three suspects were arraigned Tuesday afternoon on several felony charges, including burglary and criminal trespass. They are being held at the Cambria County Jail until a preliminary hearing next week.
