A fundraiser is helping a police department in our region get equipment officers need.

AmeriServ and Community Foundation for the Alleghenies (CFA) teamed up to start the Johnstown Police Support Fund. They want to raise $40,000 to buy 30 tasers for the Johnstown Police Department.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Institute of Justice, “The odds of suspect injury decrease by almost 60% when police use a Taser or a CED.”

The executive director of CFA said raising money for the tasers will not only help keep people safer, it shows solidarity.

“Here’s a community working together. Here’s an example of good leadership. Here’s an example of good collaboration,” said Mike Kane, the executive director of Community Foundation for the Alleghenies.
