A $2.5 million trail extension is coming to Bedford County.
Congressman Bill Shuster was in Bedford Wednesday morning to announce the funding from the federal highway funds.
The proposed trail will connect Bedford Springs, Downtown Bedford, Old Bedford Village, and the Friendship Village Campground. The goal is to connect tourists who may visit one area, to all of the different attractions that Bedford has to offer.
The trail will be more than 2 and a quarter miles of bike and pedestrian trail and will include two stream crossings.
The existing part of the trail is reported to have 20,000 uses per year.
“I called the secretary and said ‘Hey, I got you $82 million, can I have a little bit of that for my district?’ and [she] and Governor Wolf were really good about saying ‘yes we can do it’. So I can tell you, as I sail into the sunset, getting this project done is about as sweet as it gets. Because this is my home county, our farm is in Bedford County, I’ve lived here for most of my life, so it’s a really really sweet day for me,” said Shuster.
The hope is that by connecting these attractions and businesses in Bedford, the trail can aid in the economic development in the county.
